Linden NJ Police Officer Arrested, Accused of Distributing Marijuana
A Linden NJ police officer was arrested for allegedly distributing marijuana in Union County, New Jersey.
The suspect is employed as a sergeant with the Linden Police Department. He was the subject of a narcotics investigation by the Union County Prosecutor’s Office. Detectives with the prosecutor’s office launched the investigation after receiving a tip about illegal drug activity in Linden, New Jersey.
After conducting the investigation and obtaining enough evidence to secure a search warrant, members of the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Guns, Gangs, Drugs, and Violent Crimes Task Force executed the search warrant at the suspect’s residence on Merritt Avenue in Sayreville, NJ. The Union County task force was assisted by the Sayreville Police Department Narcotics Unit.
While searching the suspect’s home, law enforcement allegedly discovered a small amount of pot.
The suspect was subsequently placed under arrest without incident. Also arrested was the suspect’s girlfriend, a 22-year-old Sayreville NJ woman who was at the house at the time of the drug raid. She has been charged with simple possession of marijuana.
The 30-year-old suspect is the son of the captain of the Linden Police Department. He faces criminal charges for distribution of marijuana and simple possession of marijuana. Although the marijuana possession charge is classified as a disorderly persons offense, the marijuana distribution is classified as a fourth degree felony and carries severe criminal penalties. In fact, a conviction on fourth degree distribution of marijuana charges could result in a sentence of up to 18 months in NJ State Prison.
After being arrested and processed, the suspect and his girlfriend were both able to secure their releases from police custody on their own recognizance. They were each issued a summons to appear in court at a later date to address the drug crime charges against them. The female suspect will have to show up to Linden Municipal Court, while the male suspect is going to need to appear in Union County Superior Court because he has been charged with a felony-level offense.
While the criminal charges against the main suspect in the drug distribution case remain pending, he will be suspended from his job with the Linden Police Department. The suspect was actually already suspended before his recent drug arrest.
